RECLAMATION is a creative research project with an environmental focus, led by four leading local artists.

In exploring nature through a variety of artforms, the artists have produced works that serve to raise the awareness of the many facets of and possibilities for Sydney Harbour's Cabarita Park beyond its simple beauty as a recreational area.

It is hoped that, through creative research, development and production programs such as these and the increased community engagement that results, a better understanding of the local area can lead to a sustainable future in the care of our invaluable foreshore assets.

Arts NSW and the City of Canada Bay funded the project.

Cabarita Park Twilight Banner

By the Water

With a work specific to Cabarita Park, composer Katia Beageais and vocal artists Halcyon have created a composition for voice and pre-recorded sounds, including sounds from the park. The soundscape includes lapping waves, river wash, birds, wind and rustling trees as well as man-made sounds such as the passing Parramatta River ferry motors.

Incorporating text from the 1869 poem 'Bellbirds' by legendary Australian writer Henry Kendall, 'By the Water' is a haunting creation that implores us to consider the natural environment as a source of refuge and beauty. The word 'Cabarita' is Aboriginal for 'By the Water'.

For the event, one of the park's everyday picnic shelters was transformed into a dazzling mini performance venue, with live video backdrops and lighting that intensified as dusk approached.

In order for the performance to be more than Halcyon simply singing to a pre-recorded soundtrack, the sampled sounds were 'mapped' onto a musical keyboard, allowing composer Katia to interact with the vocalists in real time.
